AWS Start-Up Challenge

Attention: Start-Ups and Entrepreneurs!

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is searching for the next hot start-up that is leveraging AWS to build its infrastructure and business.

Do you have a great idea or an existing application that uses services from AWS? Enter the AWS Start-Up Challenge to win $100,000 in cash and AWS credits, and receive an investment offer from Amazon.

Tell us about it

To enter, developers, entrepreneurs, and start-ups begin by completing an online application by October 28, 2007. The Amazon judges’ panel will review all applications and choose five finalists, based on originality and creativity of the idea, likelihood of long-term success, how well it addresses a need in the marketplace, and implementation of pay-as-you-use Amazon Web Services.

Finalists will be announced in November and Amazon will produce a video of each finalist to post on aws.amazon.com where the community can vote for their favorite start-up.

The final countdown

For the Final Round, AWS will fly the finalists to Amazon Headquarters in Seattle to present their idea to the judges’ panel. That evening, the finalists will pitch their business to VCs, mingle with industry leaders and Amazon executives, and be featured at the AWS Start-Up Challenge Awards Dinner, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

Reap the rewards

Prizes include $50,000 in cash, $50,000 credit toward Amazon Web Services, an investment offer from Amazon, and mentoring sessions from an Amazon Web Services Technical Expert. All five finalists will be included in various promotional activities and be featured at the invitation-only AWS Start-Up Challenge Awards Dinner.

Plus, all contestants with qualified entries will receive up to $25 for their use of Amazon Web Services during the contest. The credit will be applied against actual use by the entrant of paid Amazon Web Services from September 1st to December 31, 2007.

What are you waiting for?  Submit your idea today!

 AWS Start-Up Challenge Official Rules

  1. HOW TO ENTER:  Contest entry period begins at 9:00 A.M. (PT) on September 12, 2007 and ends at 11:59 P.M. (PT) on October 28, 2007 (the "Entry Period"). To enter, log onto http://aws.amazon.com/startupchallenge during the Entry Period, complete the entry form following the instructions provided and include your business proposition ("Business Proposition").  The Business Proposition must consist of a product, Web site, software application/tool, service or any other system that substantively uses the paid services from Amazon Web Services ("AWS"), namely Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, Amazon FPS, Amazon SQS, Amazon Mechanical Turk, or Alexa Web Services (collectively, the "AWS Paid Services"). Each Business Proposition submitted must be the original creation of the entrant. Entries that do not meet the requirements set forth in these Official Rules may be disqualified at Sponsor’s sole discretion.  More than one entry may be submitted by any entrant.  However, no more than one entry per entrant will be selected as a Finalist.  Entrants are responsible for all costs associated with preparing and submitting their Business Propositions, including applications, and building and testing prototypes.  All Business Propositions or applications that violate any intellectual property, local, state or federal laws or violate any entrant’s employer’s policies will be deemed ineligible. Entries must be received no later than 11:59 P.M. (PT) on October 28, 2007.  Sponsor’s servers and clock shall be deemed the official clock for the contest and the entrant’s proof of submission does not constitute proof of receipt by Sponsor.  Sponsor is not responsible for lost, misdirected, late, illegible, incomplete or unintelligible entries, or for inaccurate entry information, whether caused by the entrant or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in this contest, or by any technical or human errors that may occur in submitting, receiving or processing entries.  Entries will not be returned to the entrants.

  2. JUDGING:  First Round.  All qualified entries will be judged by a panel of judges from Sponsor and its affiliates that currently serve in technical and business roles ("Amazon Judging Panel").  The Amazon Judging Panel will select five (5) finalists (the "Finalists") based on their entry form and using the following judging criteria: (a) implementation and integration of the AWS Paid Services; (b) originality and creativity; (c) likelihood of long-term success and scalability; and (d) effectiveness in addressing a need in the marketplace.  In November 2007, the Finalists will be announced on the contest website http://aws.amazon.com/startupchallenge and will be notified by e-mail and/or phone.  In order to proceed to the final round, the Finalists must notify Sponsor of their willingness to proceed to the final round within two (2) business days of notification and satisfy other eligibility requirements described in these Official Rules. If a Finalist does not timely satisfy any eligibility requirements, an alternate will be selected. For each Finalist, Sponsor will produce, at its expense and at the Finalist’s location, a professional video highlighting the Finalist’s Business Proposition (the "Finalist Video"). The Finalist Videos will be posted online at http://aws.amazon.com/startupchallenge in November 2007.  The public will be permitted to view and vote on the Finalist Videos online at the contest website, but the votes will not determine the winner.

Final Round.  The final round will take place in December 2007 in Seattle, WA at the Amazon corporate headquarters. Each Finalist must be present in person at the final round and must prepare, at the Finalist’s expense, a 30-minute presentation and demo of its Business Proposition. The presentation and demo will be presented to the Amazon Judging Panel. Each presentation and demo will be followed by up to 30 minutes of Q&A by the Amazon Judging Panel.  The Finalists’ entries will be judged on the following judging criteria: (a) implementation and integration of the Business Proposition with the AWS Paid Services; (b) originality and creativity; (c) likelihood of long-term success and scalability; (d) effectiveness in addressing a need in the marketplace; and (e) the Finalist’s presentation. The online public votes from the Finalist Videos will be made available to the Amazon Judging Panel. An awards dinner will be held for the Finalists in December 2007. Winners will be publicly announced the following day. Finalists must be present at the final round (but not the awards dinner) to be eligible to win the First Prize. All decisions of the Amazon Judging Panel are final and binding.

  3. ELIGIBILITY:  The contest is open to: (a) individuals or sole proprietors who are legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who have reached the age of majority in their state of residence at time of entry; or (b) privately held businesses that are legally domiciled in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia and that have not generated more than $10 million in annual revenues.  Prizes will be awarded in the name of the individual or business that entered. By the time of submission, entrants must have an AWS account (see https://aws-portal.amazon.com/gp/aws/developer/registration/index.html). Any individual submitting an entry on behalf of a business entity represents and warrants that he/she is authorized to submit an entry on behalf of such business entity. The contest and these Official Rules are void where prohibited by law. By entering, each entrant represents and warrants that (i) if the entrant is a business, it has not generated more than $10 million in annual revenues; and (ii) the Business Proposition entered is original and was created solely by the entrant.  Employees of Sponsor, its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries, and participating advertising and promotion agencies and prize suppliers (and members of their immediate family and/or those living in their household) are not eligible.
  4. ENTRY CREDITS.  All eligible entrants with qualified entries received by the deadline of 11:59 P.M. (PT) on October 28, 2007 will receive up to a credit of $25 for their use of AWS Paid Services after January 1, 2008. The credit will be equal to the fees paid or accrued for actual use by the entrant of the AWS Paid Services from September 1st to December 31, 2007, up to $25. If the fees paid or accrued for the actual use of the AWS Paid Services do not exceed $25, the entrant will only be eligible for a credit equal to the fees paid or accrued for such actual use. The credit will be applied to the entrant’s AWS account when the billing statement for the month of December is sent.
  5. PRIZES.  The following prizes will be awarded:

    a. One (1) First Prize, consisting of $50,000 in credit for AWS Paid Services (Actual Retail Value (ARV) $50,000), $50,000 in cash, and four (4) one-hour mentoring sessions from an AWS Technical Expert (ARV $500). Amazon.com, Inc. or one of its affiliates also will offer the first prize winner a loan in order to bring its Business Proposition to market (the "Investment Offer").  The Investment Offer would be in the form of a promissory note on terms to be determined by Amazon.com, Inc., in its sole discretion, including the conversion of such promissory note to equity in a future equity financing.

    b. Four (4) Second Prizes, each consisting of $5,000 in credit for AWS Paid Services (ARV $5,000 each).

    c. Five (5) Third Prizes, one (1) to be awarded to each of the Finalists, each consisting of a trip for one (1) to Seattle, WA to attend the final round, leaving from the major airport nearest to each Finalist’s home.  Trip includes (i) round trip, coach class, air transportation for one (1) person, (ii) two nights standard hotel accommodations for one (1) person, and (iii) attendance at the awards dinner. At Sponsor’s discretion, Sponsor may substitute surface transportation for air travel for any Finalist who lives near destination. All expenses not specifically mentioned, including, but not limited to, ground transportation/transfers, additional food and beverages, gratuities and taxes, are the sole responsibility of each Finalist. Each Finalist must be available to travel on the dates specified by Sponsor, or may forfeit the Third Prize and the opportunity to win any other prize.  Selected airline and hotel are at the discretion of Sponsor. Each Finalist must possess required travel documents (e.g. valid photo I.D.) prior to departure. Once the travel schedule has been arranged, it cannot be altered, and failure of any Finalist to follow such schedule shall not obligate Sponsor in any way to provide such Finalist with alternate arrangements. Approximate retail value of each Third Prize is $1,000.  The actual retail value (ARV) will depend on each Finalist’s city of departure.  If the ARV is less than the stated approximate retail value, the difference will not be awarded.

All prizes will be awarded, provided at least 50 qualified entries are received from separate entrants.  In the event there are two or more identical and equally qualified entries, the first one to be submitted will be considered. Prizes will be delivered up to 30 days after the winners are announced. All AWS credits awarded as prizes in the contest must be applied to future use of the AWS Paid Services by the winner. Any unused portion of the AWS credits will expire on January 1, 2011.  AWS credits are non-transferable and may not be redeemed for cash or applied to any other account.  The mentoring sessions awarded as part of the First Prize must be used by January 1, 2009.  All AWS credits utilized shall be inclusive of any applicable sales, use, gross receipts, or similar transaction based taxes ("Transaction Taxes").  Therefore, to the extent that any AWS Paid Services are subject to Transaction Taxes, the value of the AWS Paid Services and the Transaction Taxes will be deducted from the AWS credits. All other expenses not specified are the responsibility of the winners.  ALL TAXES ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNERS

  6. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION:  The Amazon Judging Panel may request additional information from the entrants as may be necessary to judge the Business Propositions, and the entrants must respond to any requests for additional information within two (2) business days from the time the request is made.  Finalists and winners from any round of this contest may forfeit prizes and/or opportunities to proceed in contest if (1) Sponsor is unable to contact him or her within two (2) business days of first attempted notification, or (2) the entrant fails to respond within two (2) business days of notification.
